American History x
The important subject of racism is explored in an uncompromisingly disturbing way.

Citizen Kane
This film comes together in so many ways.

Halloween (1)
The simple, repetitive music worked for me . It added up to something that has to be experienced because it can not be said directly.

The Hours
Some films excel because of theme, form, cinematography, musical score, script, the acting of one actor or of the entire cast, the importance the subject matter, individually great scenes or the work as a whole, etc. The Hours excels in all of the mentioned and more.

Men With Guns
Early in this journey from the big city to the hinterland to search for the truth, Dr. Fuentes talks to an old blind woman who confirms the rumors of atrocities in the rural villages. The old blind women saw the reality of what happened in her village without getting lost in the political details of the guerillas versus the army. The warring political factions did not need to be identified by her. It was enough to say the atrocities were committed by "men with guns".

Not a simple film. Guilt versus innocence, sins of omission versus sins of commission, imagined hope versus brutal reality, a dead end road versus finding something that survives even after your death, the capacity to inflict pain versus the desire to give comfort and heal, cosmic order versus chaos. Men With Guns never takes the easy way out by giving black or white answers. It is focussed, yet complex. A must see.

Trust
I feel a little guilty about liking Trust, a very low budget film. If you are looking for flaws you will be very busy, not because they are hard to find, but because they are so numerous. Yet, by hooking me at an emotional level, I cared about what happened to the characters. Both of the two main characters  struggled with the dynamics of two families that had missing pieces, in one the mother, and in the other the father. Anger, manipulation and blame were the dominant strategies for dealing with the unmet needs. Although the guy's fate took a turn for the worse and the girl's personality developed, both learned to reach out to each other in an attempt to help the other. While neither of them had a magical cure for the other's problems, being there for each other was a small action of great significance.
